Abstract
Solid mixing of different bulk metals at room temperature
Through high-pressure torsion (HPT), a severe plastic deformation technique, two different bulk metals can be mixed in solid state at room temperature. Under the influence of large shear strain and instability of interfaces between dissimilar metals, the harder material is fragmented and redistributed within the matrix metal, resulting in the formation of nanoclusters and physical micro/nanolayers. These microstructural features enable mixed composite material with exceptionally high strength while maintaining good ductility.
